Message from the President

LIA President - Mr Patrick Teow

Life insurance industry achieves double digit growth

I am glad to note for the period January to September 2017 (YTD 3Q2017) that the industry achieved an 18 per cent increase in total weighted new business premiums[1] amounting to S$2,747.7 million.

There was a strong 14 per cent increase in sum assured for new business compared to the corresponding period in 2016, totalling S$92.5 billion, due to increased uptake across single and annual premium products.

Compared to the same period in 2016, the industry recorded:

a) a 23 per cent increase to S$900.7 million in weighted single premiums:

  • Single premium par and non-par products comprised 75 per cent, the balance 25 per cent were single premium linked products
  • CPFIS-included products comprised 15 per cent; cash-funded products made up the remaining 85 per cent

b) a 15 per cent increase to S$1,847.0 million in weighted annual premiums

c) a 27 per cent increase to $147 million in total weighted premiums for retirement products

Encouragingly, 18,054 policies designed to provide regular payouts during retirement years were bought, a 24 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2016. Such plans accounted for some five per cent of total weighted premiums for YTD 3Q2017.

Health insurance premiums[2] totalled S$258 million for YTD 3Q2017, of which Integrated Shield Plan (IP) premiums and IP riders accounted for 91 per cent (S$234 million). The remaining nine percent (S$24 million) came from other medical plans and riders. 2.94 million lives, or about three in four Singaporeans, have an IP which provides coverage over and above the MediShield Life component.

That more Singaporeans are acting on the value they see in financial planning and insurance is reflected in yet another quarter of strong growth for the industry. As more and more people are reaching retirement, we are heartened that Singaporeans are taking up insurance to provide regular income streams in their senior years.

Ensuring continued access to affordable healthcare is another key focus as our population continues to age.

Industry strength

Employment in Singapore continues to grow in the finance sector[3], with an eight per cent increase in the number of corporate staff employed by our industry in YTD 3Q2017. 7,047 were employed by member companies, up from 6,540 a year ago. Life insurers continue to seek talent for all functions, including underwriting and specialised digital technologies.

14,790 representatives held exclusive contracts with companies that operate an agency force.

Appreciation and well wishes

It leaves me to thank staff of member companies, their representatives and colleagues for making 2017 a year of strong growth, and wish one and all a great celebration during this holiday season, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Patrick Teow

[1]Weighted new business premiums measures premiums collected on new policies by taking into account (1) 10 per cent of the value of single premium products, (2) all of a year's premiums for annual premium products, and (3) adjusted value for products with premium payment durations of less than 10 years.

The figure is calculated as follows: 10% Single Premium Insurance + 100% Annual Premium Insurance + Adjusted premium for Insurance with premium payment durations of less than 10 years.

[2]With effect from 1 January 2016, the MediShield Life premiums have been excluded from LIA statistics.

Tokio Marine Life Insurance Singapore Ltd. (TMLS) has been awarded the Marketing Excellence - Excellence in Integrated Marketing (Consumer) for the First Touch (#MyLoveForYou) campaign.

Launched earlier this year in June, in celebration of the overwhelming parental instinct to protect their children, the campaign follows the journey of two couples in their final months of pregnancy. The two families discuss their preparations, anxieties, excitement, and dreams for their children as they gear up for the arrival of new additions to their families.

Inspired by the very first milestone of parenthood - the tender moment of holding a newborn child - the First Touch campaign encouraged the public to share treasured memories of love, protection and gratitude through a series of contests on TMLS' official Facebook page.

The campaign also marked a key milestone in TMLS' ongoing endeavor to provide customers with a comprehensive range of solutions for their families. These include the KidAssure GIO rider, niche coverage plan TM Protect Cancer, and TM Protect 1, Singapore's first disability plan to fill a vital protection gap by providing a monthly benefit upon the inability to perform a Single Activity of Daily Living.

Manulife Life Saving Pots CSR Event @ Punggol

Manulife CSR Event - Photo1

In tropical countries like Singapore, pools of stagnant water can often be found in overwatered plants. To deny mosquitoes their favourite breeding ground, the idea of the Life Saving Pot was born: Manulife Singapore worked with TBWA\Group Singapore to create handcrafted plant pots coated with a special paint which contains permethrin, a non-toxic insecticide that repels mosquitoes. The paint works by disrupting the nervous systems of mosquitoes, knocking them unconscious when they attempt to land on the plant pots. The Life Saving Pot effectively prevents mosquitoes from turning our homes into theirs too.

The Life Saving Pots melds art, age-old traditions and technology to combat a long-standing concern in Singapore. The pots are first fired at The Dragon Kiln, one of the last surviving wood-fire brick kilns in Singapore. Unlike modern day gas and electric kilns, the ashes from the wood react to create unpredictable finishes that make each pot one-of-a-kind. Once the pots have cooled, they are layered with two coats of the mosquito-repelling paint.

Each Life Saving Pot is then brought to life by traditional ceramic artist, Shee Bee Heo, formally trained at Ming Village Ceramics. Over several months, she painstakingly painted the designs on each pot by hand. Her swift and elegant ink strokes come from over 30 years of experience and dedication to ceramics and traditional Chinese painting. At first glance, the pots appear to be intricately painted, traditional Chinese-style works of art. A very different story is revealed on closer inspection: the delicate flowers upon the long, fine branches depict fallen mosquitoes, with their upturned wings resembling petals.

Manulife CSR Event - Photo2

On Sunday 19 November, a group of 30 volunteers made up of Manulife Singapore colleagues and family members went to Punggol, giving away 80 Life Saving Pots to the senior communities in the area. Ms Sun Xueling, Member of Parliament, Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC was also present at the event. Our Manulife colleagues also mingled with the elderly, while also providing advice and precautions to the residents of the Punggol neighbourhood through an interactive quiz segment.

Manulife Singapore also hosted a contest on its Facebook page allowing the public to stand a chance to win a Life Saving Pot. This drove further engagement with the wider public and raised greater awareness about the Life Saving Pots. The contest, which ran between 22 November and 30 November, attracted almost 100 entries vying for one of nine Life Saving Pots, and over 230 likes and interactions.

Prudential Singapore recently launched its PRU Fintegrate Partnership (PRU Fintegrate) which seeks to collaborate with fintech startups in Singapore and globally, and to co-develop digital solutions for customers. This is the first programme of its kind by Prudential globally, and marks a milestone in its continued effort to foster greater innovation in the industry.

PRU Fintegrate focuses on building innovative financial solutions, simple interfaces and seamless experiences for customers. These enhancements will be applied across the entire value-chain - from helping customers understand how to bridge their protection gap and to plan better for their financial future, to simplifying their insurance purchase and claims process, as well as providing Prudential's Financial Consultants with digital tools to serve their customers better.

PRU Fintegrate is a rapid deployment programme offering startups the unique opportunity to build and to validate prototypes at scale and at speed. This will enable faster development of solutions to enrich the customer experience.  The programme also provides a clear end-goal as selected startups may enter into a commercial engagement with Prudential, one of Singapore's largest life insurers, as well as potentially draw on the firm's global resources.

The programme is open to fintech startups from around the world which share Prudential's commitment to making insurance simpler and more accessible to customers.  Selected startups will be able to integrate their solutions into the business through the insurer's Application Programming Interface (API) platform. Prudential's business mentors and digital specialists will provide guidance to ensure that the solutions are commercially viable.

Prudential investing to meet the changing preferences of customers

PRU Fintegrate is a key pillar of Prudential's digital roadmap to deliver better customer experiences, engage new customer segments and enhance efficiency.

To support this goal, Mr. Wilf Blackburn, Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Singapore, said the company has been strengthening its digital architecture and developing the skill set of its people, as it continues to deepen its focus on customers.

"Our customers are leading digital lives where they work, shop and transact online with ease. To connect with them more meaningfully, we are building new digital capabilities which will provide a seamless and convenient experience for them at all our touch-points. We are also harnessing technology to understand their needs more deeply and to support the further development of value-added, quality financial solutions," said Mr. Blackburn.

He added, "Innovation is an area in which we are committed to investing over the long term. In addition to enhancing the customer experience and increasing brand loyalty, it translates into significant efficiencies for our business."

Singapore's Healthiest Workplace Survey by AIA Vitality concluded with a successful event!

In May 2017, AIA Singapore launched a pilot initiative - Singapore's Healthiest Workplace Survey by AIA Vitality, where 14 employers and close to 1,200 employees took part in the survey.

This is a comprehensive survey of employees' health which provides employers in Singapore with an essential overview of their employees' wellbeing. By giving employers a deeper understanding of the efficacy of their companies' health interventions in the workplace, the survey creates an awareness of the importance of workplace health and wellbeing.

Key findings of the overall survey showed that Singapore appeared to be more similar to Australia and the UK when it came to participating in employer's wellbeing interventions. However, there are some concerns about levels of stress in the Singapore workplace and poor sleep patterns among employees. There is a culture of working long hours in Singapore, as there is in Hong Kong and Malaysia. A significant proportion of employees reported that they did not eat a balanced diet or to take sufficient physical exercise.

The survey also found that effective employer interventions include:

This was followed by Dr Christian Wards - Director of AIA Group Healthcare, who shared valuable insights on the survey. The event ended with CenturyLink and MHC Asia Group being awarded the HEALTHIEST WORKPLACE first and second places, respectively for 2017.

It was a full turnout at this successful event and all guests are looking forward to being part of AIA Singapore's initiatives for corporates.

Ready CompleteCare 'Cover Me Bro' online video campaign

The insurance industry has a reputation for being traditional and complex. Manulife Singapore aimed to meet this misconception head on with our 'Cover Me Bro' campaign, in support of the launch of our new Ready CompleteCare critical illness plan in September this year.

We all know that one colleague, friend or family member who is always asking around for help - the one who always needs you to cover for them again and again when they're not around. Drawing on this insight, we rolled out a digital film that poses the question: "Who will cover for you again and again?" Rolled out online on Facebook and YouTube, the film seeks to make Ready CompleteCare more relatable and approachable, especially to the younger generation. The film centres around two buddies caught in different hilarious circumstances at work, during sports and even in romantic situations, where one guy has to go through multiple challenges just to cover his 'bro' again and again.

This plot draws parallels to Ready CompleteCare's 'Cover Me Again' benefit. Most customers' policies and savings can weather the cost of a single critical illness. However, the reality is that many critical illnesses have a high chance of occurring and recurring during a person's lifetime. With 'Cover Me Again', Manulife introduces a 'restart' feature that covers customers again and again following a claim.

Launched in late September, viewers were invited to tag a friend who always had their backs, just like the pair of 'bros' in the video. Since its launch, the video has garnered more than 934,000 views and over 2,700 interactions on Facebook.

Educational background

I spent my formative years in Brunei Darussalam, where I received my pre-university education. Subsequently, I did a BSc undergraduate course in Actuarial Science at City, University of London in the UK. Naturally that transpired into an actuarial career.

Career background

I graduated in 2003 and have been working in Asia with MNC life insurers throughout my career, in locations such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Working as an actuary, I've gained wide exposure to various areas of an insurance company's business, including the likes of product development, profitability management, actuarial valuation, capital management, corporate strategy and even distribution channel management and liaison.

What are some of your career highlights?

  • Setting up the business planning and IFRS reporting framework and processes for new China and Thailand offices whilst working in a Hong Kong-based MNC's Regional Office.
  • In Indonesia, helping the development and launch of the country's first private medical insurance product, as well as contributing to the successful establishment of a telemarketing initiative for a bancassurer.
  • Back in Singapore, putting in place financial reinsurance and derivative structures which helped mitigate market risk for an insurer.
  • Obtaining my actuarial Fellowship and CFA charterholder qualifications.
  • And more recently, I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the Finalists for the Young ASEAN Insurance Manager Award (YAMA) held in Vientiane, Laos in November 2017.

Do you have a personal philosophy for life/career that you strongly believe in?

Staying true to your own principles and sticking to your guns even though the world may perceive you as a heretic. This isn't necessarily the best career advice, but if you always conform to the generally accepted view, you end up killing originality. So, stand up for what you believe in, speak your mind but always do so respectfully.

The highlight of my career has been the diversity of my roles within the same company. My responsibilities have ranged from risk management to distribution management in roles of more operational nature to general management, and in a variety of countries.

Do you have a personal philosophy for life/career that you strongly believe in?

What do you usually do in your leisure time?

I treasure being able to spend time with my family, and enjoy being outdoors. It's always a good time when I'm able to combine both!

Who are your inspirations in life?

I find inspiration in everyone I meet - whenever I meet people, I naturally find something about them I admire.

Tell us about a little-known fact about yourself.

I enjoy wine very much, French of course!

Describe your proudest moment.

I would say I feel an immense sense of pride whenever I get to watch my children grow as individuals. Instances that come to mind are the first time I skied with the three of them and watched them pick themselves up quickly whenever they fell, and when my son recently won a creative writing competition as it is his area of passion.

I truly believe in the noble purpose of insurance - to protect people in their times of greatest need and vulnerability. To be able to play a part in fulfilling this mission, particularly supported by the wonderful team I have, is such a joy.
